Athletic Highlights: March 29 – April 3, 2017
Baseball: The Lions went 4-0 last week including a three-game South Atlantic Conference sweep of Brevard. Christian Stampler (Davie, Fla.) had a solid week hitting .583 with a homerun, four RBI, a slugging percentage of .833 and an on-base percentage of .643. Alec Bivins (Lawndale, N.C.) threw his second complete game shutout of the season against Brevard on Saturday. Tom Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kaleb Edwards (Burnsville, N.C.) both picked up saves in the Brevard series. As a team, Mars Hill hit .355 last week including a team earned run average of 2.91. On another positive note, Head Coach Aaron Rembert recorded his 100th win at the helm of the program.
Lacrosse: Dima Ferreira (Abingdon, Va.), Spencer Andrews (Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada), and Connor Fernandes (Franklin, Wisc.) led the Lions to their first conference win with three goals each against Coker. Ryan Kearney (Tallahassee, Fla.) made 15 saves in goal for the Lions in the Coker win facing 33 shots.
Women's Soccer: Jamey Newsome was named the new Head Women's Soccer Coach at Mars Hill University. Newsome is a 1997 graduate of Mars Hill and a former men's soccer player for the Lions.
Softball: Cassidy Dahle (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Casey Stanek (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the Lions at the plate in the Lions' win over Anderson with two hits each, while Emiley Burriss (Raleigh, N.C.) contributed a game-high three RBI. Emily Crouse (Newton, N.C.) collected four hits in six at-bats (.667) and scored two runs for the Lions softball team against Lenoir-Rhyne. Sydney Elkin (Boca Raton, Fla.) threw a complete game against the Bears while allowing only three runs.
Men's Track & Field: Spencer Shade (Fairview, N.C.) captured a first-place finish in the pole vault event during the Montreat Meet after clearing a height of 3.95 meters. Teammates Brandon Beard (Fairfield, Ohio) and Noah Allison (Marshall, N.C.) turned in personal records in the 1500-meter event, finishing in times of 4:02 and 4:04, respectively, while Markece Cunningham (Tryon, N.C.) earned a spot in the finals of the shot put with a distance of 12.91 meters.
Women's Track & Field: Jordan Bair (New Carlisle, Ohio) finished first in the pole vault with a launch of 3.20 meters. Sydney Britt (Terra Cei, Fla.) ran a 2:31 in the 800-meter race, beating her old season-best by six seconds while also anchoring the 4X100 relay team to a season-best time of 51.08.
