Athletic Highlights: March 8 – March 15, 2017
Baseball: The Lions went 4-2 last week including a series win at Wingate. Alec Bivins was named the SAC pitcher of the week. Bivins, a junior from Lawndale, N.C., threw a seven inning complete game shutout to lead the Lions to a 14-0 win over Wingate on March 11. He struck out six Bulldog hitters and gave up just one hit in his outing. Hunter Merrill hit .444 with four RBI last week while Brett Brubaker hit .400 with two homeruns, a double and seven RBI. Mars Hill is 13-12 overall and 3-3 in the SAC.
Lacrosse: Mars Hill was denied an upset of No. 19 Queens University on Saturday afternoon. Alex Lipsky led the Lions' offense with two goals and one assist. Jake Trafton added a goal and an assist, while Connor Fernandes and Keaton Lissel chipped in one goal each. Ryan Kearney tallied a team-high six groundballs and Dima Ferreira added five grounders. Kyle Dozzi recorded three caused turnovers on the afternoon.
Softball: Starting pitcher Sydney Elkin, a senior from Boca Raton, Fla. turned in two brilliant performances during the past week for MHU softball. Elkin went 1-1 and picked up a save, tossing a total of 24.2 innings and allowing six earned runs for an impressive 2.20 earned run average.
Men's Golf: Luke Challis, a freshman from Nuneaton, England collected his first career all-tournament team recognition as he finished tied for third at the Cavalier Spring Invitational hosted by Montreat College. Challis shot an opening round 78 followed by a final round 76 to finish +10 for the tournament.
Men's Track & Field: Keenan Foxx, a sophomore from Banner Elk, N.C. established a new Mars Hill University Track and Field record in the weight throw with a solid distance of 14.43 meters.
Women's Track & Field: Samantha Burns, a sophomore from Nebo, N.C. broke the 8-year-old triple jump school record with a jump of 10.14 meters, while sophomore Jordan Bair (New Carlisle, Ohio) broke the school record in the pole vault with a height of 3.17 meters.
Men's Tennis: Alberto Ortiz, a senior from Madrid, Spain captured a No. 1 singles victory over Newberry's Edison Ambarzumjan. After dropping set one 7-6, Ortiz battled back to take sets two and three by scores of 6-1 and 3-1, respectively, to secure the victory.
Women's Tennis: Jasha Geerdink, a junior from Apeldoorn, Netherlands prevailed in the No. 1 singles spot against Lincoln Memorial's Johanna Delisse in straight sets (7-5, 6-3).
