Mars Hill opens spring season versus Tusculum
The Mars Hill football team (0-1, 0-1 SAC) was defeated 58-20 in their season opening game versus Tusculum (1-1, 1-0 SAC) Friday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (0-1, 0-1 SAC) was defeated 58-20 in their season opening game versus Tusculum (1-1, 1-0 SAC) Friday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Jimmy Urzua led the Lions passing game, going 11-of-25 for 173 yards and one score. Christopher Roberts picked up 39 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. Marquis Williams led the Lions' received with 138 yards on two catches and one score. CJ Thompson recorded 103 yards receiving. Landon Honeycutt posted eight tackles with one sack.
The Pioneers opened the scoring with 7:50 left in the first quarter, but on the first play of the next drive, the Urzua connected with Williams for a 75-yard pass to put the Lions on the board.
The Lions tied the game less than five minutes into the second off of Roberts' one-yard rush. The two-point conversion by Noah Pittman knotted the game at 14.
The second quarter saw Tusculum score 28 points. Rogan Wells threw for two touchdown passes, a 64-yard strike to Aaron Fudge to go up 28-14. With under a minute remaining in the half, a 44-yard pass to Justice Parham put the Pioneers up by 21.
Roberts struck again for the Lions late in the third for his second on the night, a four-yard scamper.
Wells threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns to four different wide receivers. TJ Jones recorded 71 yards on the ground on 10 attempts for two scores.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, March 20 when they face Carson-Newman. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
