
Mars Hill dominates in home opener
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated Virginia State (0-2) by a score of 23-8 Saturday afternoon in their home opener inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated Virginia State (0-2) by a score of 23-8 Saturday afternoon in their home opener inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions led 7-0 after the first 15 minutes of play as Josh McCallion led the team with three goals. He opened the scoring just six seconds into the game. Joey Baumgardt scored twice and added an assist on Austin Stroud's marker for three points in the quarter.
Mars Hill scored five straight to open the second, two on the man-advantage. Brandon Woodward recorded a goal and an assist in the run. He added another goal with just under four minutes to play in the half. Stroud and Ben Hokenson also collected a goal and an assist in the second.
Despite the Spartans outscoring the Lions 6-3 in the third, they were unable to stop the clicking offense of Mars Hill. The Lions struck for five more goals in the fourth.
Stroud led all players with five points (3g, 2a) followed by four from McCallion (4g) and George Yanssens (2g, 2a).
Splitting time in the cage were Steven Smith, Alex Oleschuk, Shane Hecht, and Xavier Wells. Smith played just over 32 minutes, making eight saves for the win.
The Lions continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 14 when they host Young Harris. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
