Lions Finish in Fifth at Covered Bridge Open
Men's Cross Country finishes in fifth place at season-opening Covered Bridge Open
BOONE, N.C.- The Mars Hill men's cross country team finished in fifth place at the Covered Bridge Open on Friday. The Lions were the top-finishing NCAA Division II team and finished higher than NCAA Division I member East Carolina.
Mars Hill finished with 130 points, topping King with 176 points, East Carolina with 179 points and Lees-McRae with 216 points. Florida was the winner with 32 points, followed by a second place tie between Florida State and Appalachian State.
Alex Griggs led Mars Hill with a 12th place finish, navigating the 6,400-meter course in 20:43.70. Nathan Jones scored a 20th place result with a time of 20:54.66. Garrett Farrimond finished in 29th place (21:16.23), followed by Cesar Reyes in 40th (21:39.68). Freshman Nick Resor began his Mars Hill career with a time of 22:09.83 and a 51st place effort, with Brandon Beard finishing in 60th (22:48.01). Freshman Noah Allison was the final Lion to score as he finished in 63rd place with a time of 23:02.65.
Other finishers for Mars Hill were Daniel Lerner (23:05.91), Gil Gilreath (23:35.39), Jonathan Spence (24:07.55), Chase Shermer (24:15.24), Justin Sestan (24:24.22), Nathan Wheeler (24:26.75) and Trey Heavener (24:40.32).
The Lions return to the course next Saturday morning at the Furman Invitational.
