
Lions swept by Newberry on road
The Mars Hill softball team (11-20, 2-16 SAC) was swept on the road Sunday versus Newberry (17-8, 9-9 SAC) by scores of 10-0 and 10-2, respectively.
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (11-20, 2-16 SAC) was swept on the road Sunday versus Newberry (17-8, 9-9 SAC) by scores of 10-0 and 10-2, respectively.
GAME ONE: NBY 10, MHU 0
Newberry only allowed one hit in their game one win over the Lions.
Leading 2-0 after the third inning, the Wolves scored eight runs in the fourth with the catalyst being Hannah Towery's solo home run. Later in the frame, leading 6-0, Towery recorded her second home run of the day, a grand slam that put the Wolves up by double-digits.
Towery went 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI to lead all players.
Alyssa Ball picked up the shutout win, allowing one hit in five innings.
GAME TWO: NBY 10, MHU 2
Hannah Towery continued her offensive dominance, recording another four RBI in game two's 10-2 win.
Tied at two entering the bottom of the fourth, Towery drove in three with a double down the left field line. Later in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Wolves up 9-2, her RBI single to center field gave Newberry the eight-run advantage.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first inning with Peyton Duba's sacrifice fly that plated Brookelynn Nanney. After the Wolves took the 2-1 lead in the second, Maggie Langheim's solo home run in the top of the fourth knotted the game up.
Paige Meyer and Mckenzie Barneycastle led all players with three hits apiece while Towery led all players with four RBI. Langheim and Ashley Evans led the Lions with two hits apiece.
Alexandrea Sullivan earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched.
Mars Hill returns to action on Thursday, April 15 when they face Queens in their final road series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
