The Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee elected new leadership during its NCAA Convention meeting this week in Indianapolis. The committee also elected representatives for the division's Implementation Committee and Management Council.
Wiley Cain, a football player for Kentucky Wesleyan, was elected chair of Division II SAAC. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference's representative on Division II SAAC, Cain has served on the national committee since 2020. His term will end after the 2023 Convention. During his time on Division II SAAC, Cain has served as a student-athlete representative on the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports and a liaison to the COVID-19 Medical Advisory Group.
Cain will be joined on Division II SAAC's executive board by three others. Ismael Contreras, a men's soccer player for Purdue Northwest, was elected vice chair. Contreras will serve on Division II's Legislation Committee as part of his role. Maggie Langheim, a softball player at Mars Hill, was elected as the committee's internal operations coordinator, and Sylvia Cortés, a track and field athlete at Alabama Huntsville, will serve as the external communications coordinator.
"Being selected chair of national SAAC is an honor and a privilege. We are in a time where history is being made every day. I am excited to represent the voice of over 123,000 student-athletes during the momentous changes and progress that will be made in 2022," Cain said. "Our new SAAC executive board is comprised of a diverse and powerful group of student-athletes who are committed to being effective advocates and starting this new era for the NCAA in the best possible manner."
Division II SAAC also named Grace Martin (West Virginia State volleyball) and Corbin Thaete (Cal State San Marcos men's soccer) as its representatives on Division II Management Council.
Additionally, Division II SAAC elected four members to the Division II Implementation Committee: Michaela Boyd (Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer), Zach Brown (North Georgia men's basketball), Thaete and Contreras. Former California University of Pennsylvania volleyball player Madeleine McKenna, a member of the Constitution Committee, will also be a student-athlete representative on the Implementation Committee.
Each student-athlete representative will also serve on the following Implementation Committee subcommittees: budget, championships, governance, membership, and legislative process and compliance.
The Implementation Committee, co-chaired by Wisconsin-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford and Delta State President William LaForge, is charged with reviewing the division's rules and policies and making recommendations to ensure that changes are consistent with the principles agreed upon in the new constitution. It comprises 28 voting members: one representative from all 23 Division II conferences and five current and former student-athletes.
