
Lions swept by Newberry
The Mars Hill softball team (5-21, 2-12 SAC) was swept by Newberry (28-10, 9-5 SAC) by scores of 7-4 and 14-2 Wednesday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (5-21, 2-12 SAC) was swept by Newberry (28-10, 9-5 SAC) by scores of 7-4 and 14-2 Wednesday afternoon.
GAME ONE: NBY 7, MHU 4
Newberry tacked on two late insurance runs to escape game one with a 7-4 win.
An RBI groundout in the top of the sixth by Sierra Brogdon and a solo home run by Mackenzie Turner in the top of the seventh provided enough of a cushion for the Wolves to take game one.
Brogdon opened the scoring in the top of the first, cranking a three-run home run. She picked up her fourth RBI of the game in the top of the fourth with an RBI groundout. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lions cut the deficit to three off of an infield single by Zoie Pistel to plate Micki Maxson.
In the bottom of the fifth, Farley Park's three-run home run brought the Lions within one, entering the sixth trailing 5-4.
Turner led all players with three hits while Brogdon collected five RBI. Miranda Marks and Deja Smith each recorded two hits while Park led the Lions with three RBI.
Lindsey Foster struck out six, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings pitched for her sixth win of the season. Brittany Crowson threw two perfect innings to record her first save. Kayla Gallagher struck out four, allowing seven runs on nine hits in the loss.
GAME TWO: NBY 14, MHU 2
The Newberry offense rolled over into game two, scoring 14 runs to complete the sweep.
Both Mackenzie Turner and Hannah Towery hit two-run home runs while Sierra Brogdon picked up four more RBI on the day, going 4-for-4 in the game.
Zoie Pistel and Maegan Blair drove in the Mars Hill runs.
Brittany Crowson allowed two runs on six hits in five innings pitched for her fourth win of the season. Deja Smith was credited with the loss.
Mars Hill hosts Queens on Saturday, April 2 at Ponder Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
