
Mars Hill sweeps Lincoln, earns first wins of season
The Mars Hill softball team (2-8) was able to take both parts of a double header by run-rule against Lincoln (Pa) (0-4) on Monday afternoon at Ponder Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill softball team (2-8) was able to take both parts of a double header by run-rule against Lincoln (Pa) (0-4) on Monday afternoon at Ponder Field.
GAME ONE: MHU 12, LU 0
Mars Hill's Kayla Gallagher started game one and threw a complete game shutout, giving up only a single hit, striking out eight, to earn herself her first win of the season.
The Lions bats came alive in the bottom half of the second inning to put 10 runs on the boards, growing their lead to 11. Alicia Wittenhagen launched a two run homerun to left center, her second of the game, followed by a Deja Smith grand slam later in the inning. Wittenhagen accounted for three of the Lions' twelve runs, while Smith batted in four.
The game was completed after four and a half innings of play due to the eight run mercy rule to earn the Lions their first win of the 2022 campaign.
GAME TWO: MHU 12, LU 1
Deja Smith tossed a complete game in the second half of the double header, only allowing a single run through five innings, striking out five, to earn herself her first win of the season.
After going down 1-0 in the top half of the first, the Lions were able to string together a pair of five-run innings in the second and third, bringing their lead to 10-1, and would later expand the lead to 12-1.
The bottom half of the third inning included a pair of homeruns by Sydney Craig and Peyton Duba, scoring Alyssa Christopher, Alicia Wittenhagen, and Micki Maxson.
The Lions were able to hold of Lincoln and finish the game after four and a half innings of play, again due to the eight run mercy rule.
The Lions travel to Murfeesboro, N.C. this weekend to compete in the Hawk's Classic Annual Softball Tournament.
