Lions felled in SAC Quarterfinal series
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team's (22-24) season came to an end Saturday afternoon, dropping game two and the South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal series versus Wingate (35-19).
The Lions fell in game one by a score of 4-3 and in game two, was defeated by a score of 11-1.
GAME ONE: WU 4, MHU 3
In Friday's opening game, the Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Maia Sholter's two-run home run. Wingate responded in the bottom of the second as Laney McLaurin answered with a two-run blast of her own.
The Bulldogs plated two runs in the fourth, highlighted by Riley Davis' RBI double plating Damyia McFadden. McFadden's run ultimately served as the game-winning run.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Brooke Hanson drew a walk, plating Sholter for her second run of the game.
McFadden led all players with two hits while Sholter and McLaurin led their respective squads with two RBI apiece.
GAME TWO: WU 11, MHU 1
Saturday's game two saw the Bulldogs dominate from the onset, scoring six runs in the first three innings. Hannah Stevens' two-run home run in the first was the catalyst for the offensive burst.
Following three scoreless innings, Wingate plated another five runs in the top of the seventh as Stevens' RBI double scored the Bulldogs' seventh run.
Breaking the shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh, Bri Weimer reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing Daci Sarver to score the Lions' lone run.
Laney McLaurin led all players with three hits while three Bulldogs collected two or more RBI in the contest.
Sarver led the Lions with two hits while Maia Sholter, Farley Park, and Katie Todd each recorded one apiece.
The Lions entered the tournament as the eight seed. It marked their first SAC Tournament appearance since the 2013 season.
