Volleyball Falls to Queens
Queens defeated Mars Hill 3-0 in a SAC match on Friday night
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost a South Atlantic Conference match to Queens University 3-0 in Stanford Arena on Friday night. The Royals won by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-18. Queens improves to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the league while Mars Hill drops to 4-6 and 2-4.
Elizabeth Kaeser led the Lions with eight kills. Victoria Kaiser had a match-high 23 digs. Kaiser, Andie Russell and Courtney O'Keefe each had a service ace.
Jessica Raines and Meredith Jones each led Queens with eight kills. Jones, Megan Mancini and Annika Jones each had 10 digs. Elizabeth Bialkowski led the Royals with two solo blocks, while Taylor Henry had four block assists.
With the first set tied at 9, Queens went on a 5-0 run to claim a 14-9 lead. Mars Hill would pull within four following a Kaeser kill but would get no closer the rest of the way as the Royals won the opening set 25-15.
Queens raced out to a 13-5 lead in the second set before the Lions used a Maddie Spurgeon kill to pull within six, 16-10. An O'Keefe service ace followed by a Queens attack error cut the Mars Hill deficit to 18-16, but the Royals would answer with four straight points for a 22-16 advantage. MHU would get no closer than five points for the remainder of the set.
The Lions held a 4-2 lead in the third set before the Royals evened the frame at 6 following a Bialkowski kill. Queens would enjoy an 11-7 lead before a Royal error evened the stanza at 11. Mars Hill took advantage of consecutive Royals errors for a 14-12 lead but Queens tied the set on a Henry service ace and took the lead for good with the next point thanks to a Lion attack error. A Kaeser kill brought Mars Hill to within 19-16 but Queens would outscore the Lions 6-2 to win the set and claim the match.
Mars Hill travels to Catawba on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match.
