Volleyball Wraps Up Season With Win at Carson-Newman
Mars Hill defeated Carson-Newman 3-2 on Saturday in Holt Fieldhouse
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Mars Hill volleyball team concluded the 2015 season with a 3-2 victory at Carson-Newman in Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Lions won by scores of 28-26, 17-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-12. Mars Hill ends the 2015 season with an 8-21 overall mark and a 6-16 South Atlantic Conference record while Carson-Newman falls to 25-6 and 18-4.
Rebecca Butler, Mary Kate Griffin and Lauren Hochstetler each had 10 kills for the Lions. Victoria Kaiser had 21 digs, followed by Hochstetler with 16, Butler with 13 and Andie Russell with 11. Griffin had a match-high five blocks. Russell finished with 27 assists. Maddie Spurgeon had three of MHU's seven service aces.
Maddie Borch had 22 kills to lead Carson-Newman, followed by Molly Locke with 11 kills. Sara Fairley had 21 digs, with Locke adding 20 followed by Kristina Hill and Maddie Zyburt with 10.
Mars Hill broke a 3-all tie in the first set with a 4-0 run for a 7-3 lead. Carson-Newman took advantage of a MHU ball handling error with the score tied at 24, but the Lions scored the final three points of the set to claim a 28-26 victory.
The Eagles raced ahead to a 5-1 lead in the second set before a Griffin kill cut the MHU deficit to 15-12. Carson-Newman scored five of the next six points as Mars Hill got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
After a kill gave Mars Hill a 6-3 lead in the third set, Carson-Newman went on a 6-1 run for a 9-7 advantage. After a C-N service error tied the set at 18, Carson-Newman went on a 4-0 run to claim a 22-18 lead and closed out the set with three straight kills.
Carson-Newman opened the fourth set on a 5-1 run but the Lions claimed a 14-11 lead thanks to an Elizabeth Kaeser kill. The Eagles cut the Lion lead to 19-17 before MHU went on a 5-0 run for a 24-17 lead. An Eagle attack error gave Mars Hill a 25-19 fourth set win.
A Mars Hill attack error gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the fifth set before the Lions evened the set at 3-all. With Mars Hill leading 10-9, a Spurgeon kill sparked a 3-0 lead to give the Lions a 13-9 lead. After a pair of Eagle kills cut the MHU lead to 14-12, the match would end on a Carson-Newman attack error.
