Bearcats Defeat Volleyball
Lander defeated Mars Hill 3-0 on Saturday
GREENWOOD, S.C.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost 3-0 to Lander as part of the PBC/SAC Challenge on Saturday afternoon in Horne Arena. The Bearcats won by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-11 while improving their record to 17-6. Mars Hill falls to 4-12 after playing their final non-conference game of 2015.
Rebecca Butler led Mars Hill with 13 kills, followed by Lauren Hochstetler with nine kills. Mary Kate Griffin and Victoria Kaiser each finished with 13 digs.
Tarryn Angermeier led Lander with 17 kills, followed by Kendall Korte with 10 kills. Julia Ferreira-Alves and Mallory Taylor each had 18 digs.
With the Lions down by one, 15-14, in the first set, Lander went on a 6-1 run for a 21-15 lead. A Lander error followed by a Hochstetler kill brought the Lions to within three, 23-20, before a Lander kill and MHU error gave the hosts a 25-20 opening set win.
After trailing 16-10 in the second set, Mars Hill used a Butler kill to cut the deficit to one, 20-19. Lander would answer with consecutive points as the Lions got no closer than two points the rest of the set.
Lander raced out to an 8-2 lead in the third set before the Lions pulled to within five points, 9-4. The Bearcats went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-6 lead as Mars Hill would get no closer than nine points for the rest of the set.
Mars Hill travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
