Volleyball Falls at Brevard
Brevard defeated Mars Hill 3-1 on Friday night
BREVARD, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team lost to Brevard in South Atlantic Conference action at Boshamer Gymnasium on Friday. Brevard won by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-14. Brevard improves to 4-8 and 3-5 in the league while Mars Hill drops to 4-8 and 2-6.
Rebecca Butler led the Lions with 11 kills, followed by Mary Kate Griffin with 10 kills. Victoria Kaiser had 20 digs with Butler adding 13 digs.
Fatima Gharachorloo and Savannah Cox each had 12 kills to lead the Tornados. Aleksandra Vrvilo had a match-high 26 digs, while Gharachorloo had a double-double with 13 digs.
Brevard took a 10-5 lead in the opening set before a Tornado error brought the Lions to within two, 10-8. A 3-0 MHU run tied the set at 17 before the teams traded points to be tied at 18. The Lions took their first lead of the set on a Butler kill for a 19-18 lead and enjoyed a 22-20 lead following a Griffin kill. Brevard held a 23-22 lead but a Tornado error followed by a pair of Butler kills gave the Lions a 25-23 win.
With the second set tied at 19, a pair of Lion errors gave the hosts a 21-19 lead. A Maddie Spurgeon kill brought the Lions to within one, 22-21, but two Kindle Kirkham kills and a Lion error gave the hosts a 25-21 win.
The Tornados jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the third set before MHU pulled to within three, 16-13 following a BC error. The Lions would get no closer in the set as Brevard would take a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 set three win.
Brevard jumped ahead to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set before the Lions used a 4-0 lead to pull within three, 8-5. The Tornados went on a 12-3 run to take a 20-8 lead before clinching the match with a 25-14 fourth set win.
Mars Hill returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for a 7 p.m. match.
