Wingate Holds Off Volleyball
Wingate defeated Mars Hill by scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-14 on Saturday
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team lost to Wingate 3-0 in a South Atlantic Conference match in Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won by scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-14. Wingate improves to 18-2 and 11-1 while Mars Hill falls to 5-14 and 3-9.
Rebecca Butler had seven kills to lead Mars Hill, followed by six kills from Lauren Hochstetler and Maddie Spurgeon. Butler also tallied three blocks. Victoria Kaiser led the Lions with 15 digs, followed by 13 from Butler and 10 by Hochstetler. Hochstetler, Griffin and Kaiser each had two service aces.
Shelly Stumpff led Wingate with 13 kills. Kimberly Hovey and Abby Saehler each had 15 digs.
Wingate took an 8-4 lead in the first set before the Lions went used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 13-11. After a Lion attack error evened the frame at 13, Wingate enjoyed a 20-16 lead following an MHU error. The Lions battled back as an Elizabeth Kaeser kill tied the set at 23 before the teams traded points for a 24-24 tie. An Iris Brewer kill followed by a service ace gave Wingate a 26-24 victory.
A Lauren Hochstetler service ace gave Mars Hill a 12-7 lead in the second set before the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to even the score at 13 following an MHU attack error. With the scored tied at 16, a Stumpff kill sparked a 4-1 Wingate run as the visitors took a 20-17 lead. Mars Hill cut the deficit to 21-19 following a Kaiser service ace but would get no closer in the set.
Mars Hill enjoyed an 8-4 lead in the third set before a Lion attack error evened the set at 10. A pair of Wingate kills gave the visitors a 12-10 lead. A Butler kill got the Lions to within a point but the Lions would get no closer as Wingate closed out the match on a 13-3 run
Mars Hill hosts Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
