Royals Defeat MHU
Queens defeated Mars Hill 3-1 on Friday night
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost 3-1 at Queens on Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action in the Levine Center on Friday night. Queens won by scores of 25-15, 17-25, 25-14 and 25-11 to improve to 10-13 overall and 8-9 in the league. Mars Hill falls to 6-17 and 4-12.
Rebecca Butler, Lauren Hochstetler and Maddie Spurgeon each had nine kills for the Lions. Victoria Kaiser led MHU with 21 digs. Mary Kate Griffin and Elizabeth Kaeser each had two service aces.
Meredith Jones led the Royals with 16 kills. Megan Mancini had 21 digs and four service aces.
After a Spurgeon kill got the Lions to within 12-10 in the opening set, Queens went on a 5-0 run for a 17-10 lead and led by as many as nine points en route to a 25-15 opening set victory.
Mars Hill hit .306 as the Lions tied the match with a 25-17 set two victory. MHU held a 15-7 lead before Queens cut the Lion lead to 16-14. The Lions responded by taking the next three points as the hosts never got closer than four points the rest of the frame.
With the score tied at 2 in the third set, Queens went on an 8-0 run for a 10-2 lead and would respond to a pair of MHU points with five straight of their own to lead 15-4 before claiming a 2-1 advantage in the match with a 25-14 win.
The Royals broke open a 4-4 tie with an 8-1 run to lead 12-5. MHU cut the deficit to 12-7 but would get no closer the rest of the match.
Mars Hill hosts Catawba tomorrow at 2 p.m.
