Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Wingate
Mars Hill suffered a 2-1 loss in their South Atlantic Conference opener against no. 19 Wingate Wednesday night.

MARS Hill, N.C. – Mars Hill suffered a 2-1 loss in their South Atlantic Conference opener against no. 19 Wingate Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions took their season record to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 on the year, 1-0 in the league.
Alex Nelson gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the 39:55 mark when he scored off a rebound that was sent in by Callum Ross. That was all the scoring the first half would see.
Charlie Machell gave Wingate a 2-0 advantage in the 47th minute when he scored on a long shot from the right side off a breakaway. The goal was unassisted.
A goal by Oscar Mitchell in the 86th minute cut the Lions' deficit to 2-1 when he found the back of the net from 15 yards out. Kenny Anderson assisted the goal for the Lions.
Wingate edged MHU in shots, 18-17. Mars Hill had seven corner kicks to the Bulldogs recording five in the match. Connor Talbot played all 90 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made seven saves. Pablo Jara also played the entire match in the net for Wingate and also made seven saves.
Mars Hill will play at SAC foe Catawba on Saturday, September 19. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
