WINGATE, N.C. – Mars Hill's women's soccer team lost their South Atlantic Conference season opener at Wingate Wednesday evening, 3-0. The Lions fell to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in the conference.
Wingate recorded only six shots on goal. Kimmi Moore scored in the 19th minute, taking a pass from Kaitlyn Fletcher and finding the back of the net. The Bulldogs took the one-goal advantage to the halftime locker room.
Taylor Krakower opened the second half with a goal in the 46th minute. She converted a pass from Brooke Howell on a cross rebound.
Naomi Matley concluded the scoring in the 80th minute, finding the bottom right-side of the net. Maggie Smith notched the assist.
The Lions had two shots. Juanita Guzman hit the post with 50 seconds remaining in the first half. Leah Hairfield had a close-range free kick in the 70th minute, but her attempt sailed high.
Wingate keeper Alexis Jones did not record a save Wednesday. Two Mars Hill net minders collected three total saves. Kaitlyn Danglemaier played 50 minutes, allowing two goals and notching two saves. Maslyn Greene finished, surrendering one goal and posting one save.
Mars Hill returns home this Saturday, hosting Catawba at 2 p.m.
