Women's Soccer Falls to Newberry

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions lost to Newberry 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 5-9-1 overall and 3-7 in the conference. Newberry improved to 7-9-1 on the season, 4-5-1 in the SAC.
Rachelle Serrano scored the first goal in the match at the 10:19 mark from 25 yards out. The score was unassisted. Erika Linch extended the Wolves lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute off a cross from Elizabeth Gutierrez. Morgan Powers ended the scoring in the first half when she scored on a through ball from Serrano at the 42:54 mark. Newberry took the 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Aleonya Hunter found the back of the net in the 56th minute to trim the deficit to 3-1. The score was unassisted. Linch added her second goal of the contest at the 82:26 mark off a pass from Gutierrez. Alyssa Ortega ended the scoring in the 89th minute to make the final tally 5-1 in favor of the visitors. Sara Silvestro assisted Ortega's goal.
Newberry outshot the Lions, 20-3. The Wolves edged Mars Hill in corner kicks, 6-1. Maslyn Greene played 70:31 in goal for MHU and made four saves. Kaitlyn Danglemaier played the final 19:29 in the net for the Lions. Korina Martinez played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Newberry and made one save.
Mars Hill will play at North Greenville on Tuesday, October 25. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
