
Mars Hill rolls Lees-McRae in midweek win
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated Lees-McRae (0-2) by a score of 10-4 Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated Lees-McRae (0-2) by a score of 10-4 Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Despite giving up the opening goal, Mars Hill roared back in the first frame, scoring four unanswered. Goals came off the sticks of Austin Stroud, George Yanssens, John Hommel, and Brandon Woodward.
The Bobcats topped the Lions in the second, outscoring them 2-1 with goals coming from Clay Adams and Spence Combs. Stroud struck for his second marker of the game and the Lions' fifth of the contest.
Mars Hill, in the second half of play, shut down Lees-McRae, outscoring them 5-1 over the last 30 minuts of play and shutting them out 4-0 in the third. Josh McCallion recorded a hat-trick by scoring twice in the third and the lone Lions' tally in the fourth. Yanssens connected with Trevor Kennedy for two man-up goals in the third less than a minute apart.
McCallion (3g, 1a) and Stroud (2g, 2a) led all players with four points. Yanssens added three points (1g, 2a) on the night.
AJ Howland was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 13-of-17 and coming up with a team-high six groundballs.
Liam Murphy stopped 19 shots in the losing effort while Steven Smith made eight saves in the win.
Mars Hill returns to the field on Saturday, February 11 when they host Montevallo. The contest is set for 1 p.m.
