Lions' fourth quarter push falls just short versus Catawba

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-6, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (1-4, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 16-12 Saturday afternoon.
The Indians used a seven-goal third quarter to propel themselves to victory. Leading 6-5 after John Hommel's second goal of the contest, Catawba reeled off six straight goals from six different goal scorers. Hommel scored both Lions' goals in the quarter.
The Lions pushed back in the fourth, outscoring the Indians 6-3. After trading goals to open the frame, Mars Hill scored four straight with two goals coming from Cole Ross, to pull within three, trailing 14-11 with 7:25 remaining. Two late Indians goals pushed the contest out of reach. Ross netted three goals in the fourth.
Catawba led 4-2 after the first with four different goal scorers. Hommel and Brandon Woodward scored both Lions goals. Woodward and Austin Stroud scored the two Mars Hill goals in the second as the teams both netted two in the second.
Frank Cetrone led all players with seven points (3g, 4a) followed by Matt Mitchell's six (3g, 3a). Stroud led the Lions with six points (2g, 4a) followed by three apiece from Ross and Hommel (3g).
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 15 when they host Limestone inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start.
