
Kennedy scores five in Senior Day win over Tusculum
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (4-12, 1-8 SAC) defeated Tusculum (4-11, 0-9 SAC) by a score of 15-13 Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (4-12, 1-8 SAC) defeated Tusculum (4-11, 0-9 SAC) by a score of 15-13 Saturday afternoon.
Tied at eight entering the second half, Mars Hill outscored Tusculum 6-2 in the third en route to the Senior Day win. The Lions opened the third on a 5-0 run with Trevor Kennedy scoring twice in that span. Brandon Woodward also scored two goals while John Hommel and AJ Howland netted the other two Lions' goals in the frame.
Tusculum outscored Mars Hill 3-1 in the final frame, but a strong defensive effort from Mars Hill fended off the Pioneers' comeback bid.
After Mars Hill's George Yanssens opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the game, Tusculum reeled off four straight goals with two from Nate Raymond. Mars Hill answered back with a 4-0 run to end the quarter with Kennedy striking twice and goals from Jake Lynch and Austin Stroud.
The offensive momentum carried over into the second as the Lions scored the first two goals of the stanza, coming from the sticks of Kennedy and Woodward. Another 4-0 Pioneers' run put them up 8-7 with just under five minutes left in the half. Hommel's first of the game with 3:36 remaining in the second, tied the game at eight.
Raymond and Dunn led the Pioneers with four points apiece (3g, 1a).
Woodward led all players with six points (3g, 3a) followed by Kennedy's five goals. Stroud ended the contest with four points (2g, 2a).
Steven Smith made 10 saves for the win.
Prior to the start of the contest, seniors Joey Baumgardt, Justin Lundy, and Trevor Kennedy were recognized for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program.
