WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-9, 0-5 SAC) was defeated 17-9 by No. 9 Wingate (8-1, 6-0 SAC) Saturday evening.
Mars Hill trailed 4-2 after the first 15 minutes of play. Josh McCallion and Savion Williams were the Mars Hill goal scorers. In the second quarter, Wingate pulled away with a 7-1 run, leading 11-3 entering the half.
Danny Riley netted two goals in the second and completed the hat-trick. Brandon Woodward was the Lions' goal scorer in the second.
The teams matched each other's outputs in the both the third and fourth quarters, both scoring four goals in the third and two apiece in the final frame.
Trevor Kennedy struck twice for Mars Hill in the third while Woodward and John Hommel collected the other two goals. Hommel netted his second of the contest in the fourth while Zack Gardner-McMinn scored the final MHU goal of the contest.
Riley led all players with five points (4g, 1a). Kennedy led the Lions with three points (2g, 1a) while Hommell and Woodward each posted two points (2g).
Steven Smith made 24 saves in the contest, establishing a new career-high.
Mars Hill hosts Montreat in non-conference play on Wednesday, March 29. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
