MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's soccer team picked up a pivotal 2-1 win over visiting Queens on Friday, October 07 inside of Meares Stadium. The Lions improved to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, while the Royals dropped to 4-7 and 2-5.
Mars Hill outshot the Royals by a total of 11-8, while taking only two corners compared to four from Queens. Kristopher Wennin tallied his fourth win of the year, playing all 90 minutes in goal, collecting three saves.
Queens wasted no time breaking through on the scoreboard, placing a ball from 30 yards out just past the outstretched hands of Wennin for a 1-0 lead just two and a half minutes into action. MHU had plenty of chances at goal over the next several minutes, but could not knot the match.
However, that would change in the 40th minute as Amine Merdjett used his blazing speed to blow past the Royals defender and score a breakaway goal, tying the match at 1-1 heading into the locker room.
Wennin stepped up in the second half, tallying two of his three saves in the period to give the Lions a chance to secure a win with a late goal. That goal would come in the 77th minute. Mars Hill earned a corner and Ian Wu sent a perfect ball into the box that found the boot of Stian Sanner, ultimately proving to be the game-winner.
The Lions will return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 11 as they step out of conference, traveling to Greenwood, S.C. to take on Lander at 7:00 p.m.
