MARS HILL, N.C. – Matthew Jackson scored the golden goal just four minutes (94:25) into the first overtime period off a loose ball to lift the Lions' men's soccer team over visiting Florida Southern, 2-1, Friday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 1-2 on the season while the Mocs fell to 1-1 overall.
Jonathan Radvogin gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead at the 42:12 mark when he found the back of the net off a rebound. The ball was sent in by Alek Cosio. The teams carried that score into the locker room at the intermission.
McKenzie Shubert knotted the contest at 1-all in the 76th minute off a cross from Same Roe. Neither team would score for the remainder of regulation play.
Florida Southern outshot Mars Hill, 14-12. Each team was called offsides once. The Mocs edged the Lions in corner kicks, 5-4. Ben Lucas played the first 45 minutes in goal and made one save. Kristofer Winnen played the final 49:25 in the net for the Lions and also made one save. Cole Clingerman played the entire match in goal for Florida Southern and made a single save.
Mars Hill will open South Atlantic Conference play at Wingate on Wednesday, September 14. Game time is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
