BREVARD, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Brevard on Saturday, September 24. The Lions drop to 3-4 overall and 2-2 within the South Atlantic Conference, while the Tornado improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
The Lions put pressure on the Tornado defense early as Ian Wu had a perfect opportunity to put the Blue and Gold in front at the 1:42 mark of the first half, but Brevard's keeper reeled in the shot to preserve the opening tie. Brevard was able to breakthrough in the 39th minute and take a 1-0 lead into the half.
Defender Franck Lannaud came inches from tying the match minutes into the second frame as his header was knocked away by the Tornado goalie. However, just over five minutes later Lannaud was presented with another chance and this time would not be denied. Stian Sanner put a ball off the block and Lannaud collected the change, exchanging it for his fifth goal of the season.
From that point it was a defensive struggle with neither team able to push ahead. Mars Hill keeper Ben Lucas was tested several times, each time standing his ground and redirecting Tornado shots. Looking as if the game would head to overtime, Brevard made one more push on a set piece. Tyler Nelson placed a header off a throw-in into the back of the net in the 88th minute to ultimately give the Tornado a 2-1 win.
Brevard totaled 17 shots, 10 on goal, while Mars Hill tallied 12 shots, 5 on goal. Each team earned three corners. Lucas played all 90 minutes in goal, tallying eight saves.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, September 28, welcoming non-conference foe, Lees-McRae to Meares Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
