Christensen tabbed All-SAC Honorable Mention
Mars Hill junior defender Jeppe Christensen was selected as a 2019 All-SAC Honorable Mention, as announced by the league Wednesday morning.
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate University forward Paul Ngongo was voted as the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, as well as Freshman of the Year, while Carson-Newman University defender Kensho Yoshikoshi was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Year. Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons was voted as the Coach of the Year, the conference announced today.
Ngongo, a freshman from Copenhagen, Denmark, becomes the first player in SAC history to win both Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same year. He leads the league in goals with 17 and points with 37. He scored a conference-best seven game-winning goals during the season and handed out three assists. He was named SAC AstroTurf Offensive Men's Soccer Player of the Week three times during the season and he has helped lead the Bulldogs to a No. 15 national ranking.
Yoshikoshi, a senior from Tokyo, Japan, anchored the Eagle defense and helped lead them to a share of the 2019 SAC Men's Soccer Regular Season title. As the top defender on one of the top defensive teams in the SAC, Yoshikoshi was instrumental in helping the Eagles allow just 1.11 goals per game, while collecting five clean sheets on the year. In addition to his stellar defense, he accounted for three goals and an assist for seven points.
Lyons led the Eagles to a 10-4-3 overall record, going 6-1-3 in the SAC, earning the program's ninth SAC Regular Season Championship. His Eagles were third in the league in scoring with 35 goals and were second in assists with 31, and they allowed just 20 goals on the defensive side of the ball. Carson-Newman is currently ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division II Super Region Two.
Joining Ngongo and Yoshikoshi on the All-SAC First Team were forwards Henrique Devens of Tusculum, Ibrahim Nadir of Newberry and Jacques Fokam-Sandeu of Coker.
The first team midfielders were Christian Provenzano of Coker, Elliot Cutts and Mikkel Fahlen Bruun of Wingate and David Alvarez of Queens.
On defense, Michael Hornsby of Queens, Owen Marshall of Wingate and Alan Brandao of Lincoln Memorial were named to the first team, while Carson-Newman's Bram Kaarsgaren was named the first team goalkeeper.
