MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' women's soccer team battled visiting Converse to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill took their season record to 0-2-1 while the Valkyries are 1-1-1 on the year.
Hallie Lycans scored the first goal in the match in the 13th minute when she kicked the ball just over the reach of the Lions' goalie. The scoring pass came from Emily Barry.
Breona Tate tied the match at 1-all at the 31:26 mark off a long pass from Kanani Thomas. Alex Marquez gave the Valkyries a 2-1 advantage when she scored on a fast break goal off a pass from Julia Babic. The teams would carry that score into the locker room at halftime.
Tate tied the contest on another breakaway in the 51st minute, recording her fifth goal in the last two matches for the Lions. Aleonya Hunter assisted the goal. That was all the scoring the match would see. Mars Hill had several chances in the overtime periods to score but the shots would not find the net.
Mars Hill outshot Converse, 18-13. Both teams were called offsides once. Converse had four corner kicks to one for MHU. Tate led the Lions with seven shots, six on goal, followed by Jessica Zedek with four shots (3 on goal). Kaitlyn Danglemaler played all 110 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made three saves. Josee Waitrovich also played the entire match in the net for the Valkyries and made nine saves.
The Lions will begin South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, September 14, when they play at Wingate. The contest is set for a 5 p.m. start.
