Furious Rally Comes Up Short as Lions Fall to Brevard

MARS HILL, N.C. – A furious rally by the Lions volleyball team fell just short as they were knocked off by Brevard, 3-2, on Saturday, September 17 inside Stanford Arena. Down 0-2, Mars Hill battled back to tie the match, but could not complete the comeback, falling by scores of 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, and 11-15. MHU is now 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the league, while Brevard improves to 3-6 and 3-2.
Brevard controlled the first two sets, leading from beginning to end in set one and only trailing once in the second, cruising to a commanding 2-0 match lead.
However, the Lions came clawing back, taking the following two sets to even the match at two sets each. The decisive fifth set was a seesaw battle with both teams trading the initial 22 points. From that point it was all Brevard as it collected the next four points to take the set, 15-11, and the match 3-2, eliminating the epic comeback for the Lions.
Mary Kate Griffin and Rebecca Butler both produced double-doubles in the losing effort. Griffin finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Butler contributed 10 kills and 10 digs. Maddie Spurgeon tallied a season-high 11 kills. Victoria Kaiser and Elizabeth Kaesar led the defensive end with 28 and 17 digs, respectively. Ellen Davis was big at the net, collecting five blocks on the afternoon. Sara Fahrenbrook handed out a team-high 44 assists on a total of 50 kills.
Mars Hill will be back in action on Tuesday, September 20 as they travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to face Lincoln Memorial. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
