NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Mars Hill volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Newberry College on Friday, September 30. After taking the first set in dominant fashion (25-16), the Lions surrendered the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-23, and 25-23. MHU falls to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in the SAC, while Newberry improved to 8-8 and 5-3 within the league.
Mary Kate Griffin paced the Lions on the night with a double-double consisting of 11 kills and 16 digs. Sally Anne Johnson and Rebecca Butler added nine and eight kills, respectively, while Andie Russell dished out a team-high 20 assists.
Mars Hill looked poised to pick up its first conference win, firing on all cylinders during the first set of action. The Lions took a 9-9 tie and turned it into a comfortable 21-14 lead, eventually taking the set and going up 1-0.
However, that would be the only set Mars Hill would take as the home standing Wolves bounced back and took three consecutive sets to deny the Lions that first win.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday, October 4, traveling to Anderson, S.C. to take on the Trojans. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
