Volleyball Drops Home Match Against Queens

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions volleyball team lost to Queens (N.C.) on Saturday, September 24 at Stanford Arena. Mars Hill falls to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the SAC, while the Royals improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference with set scores of 25-17, 27-25, and 25-13.
Mary Kate Griffin led the Blue and Gold with eight kills, while Rebecca Butler and Brooks Green tallied seven and six kills, respectively. Butler, Griffin, and Andie Russell all finished with a team-high nine digs and Sara Fahrenbrook dished out 15 assists.
Mars Hill jumped out to an early 9-6 lead in set one, but Queens came roaring back with 6-2 run to take its first lead of the contest at 12-11. That lead expanded to 24-16 and the Royals eventually took set one 25-17.
Set two was a nip-and-tuck affair with Mars Hill clinging to a slim lead of 17-15. Queens knotted the contest at 20-all with a 5-3 spurt and from that point the two teams exchanged the next 10 points. With the score deadlocked at 25-25, the Royals collected the next two points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Queens was the aggressor in set three, jumping out to a commanding 23-8 lead. The Lions made a bit of a rally, notching five of the next six points, but it was too little, too late as the Royals closed out the set, 25-13 and the match, 3-0.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, September 30, traveling to face conference foe Newberry. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
