Lions Finish Season With Sweep of Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Mars Hill volleyball team dominated Coker en route to a sweep of the Cobras on Saturday afternoon. The Lions were able to take all three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-13. Mars Hill finished the 2016 season with an 8-21 overall record and 7-15 mark in the SAC, while Coker fell to 13-17 overall and 5-17 in the league.
Mary Kate Griffin finished with 14 kills to pace the Lions, while Lauren Hochstetler (12 kills and 19 digs) and Rebecca Butler (12 kills and 10 digs) each produced double-doubles in the winning effort. Victoria Kaiser tallied a game-high 20 digs and Andie Russell dished out 42 assists.
The Lions played with tenacity from the first serve in set one, bullying their way out to a dominant 16-5 lead. Coker cut the deficit to 18-11, but a 7-1 run to end the set gave Mars Hill a 1-0 match lead.
Set two was a little more competitive, but still all in favor of the Blue and Gold. Mars Hill found itself up 18-7 after a massive attack from Sally Anne Johnson. The Cobras fought back and narrowed the gap to 23-18, but back-to-back kills from Kaiser and Hochstetler gave the Lions a commanding 2-0 match lead.
With the score at 9-6 in favor of MHU during set three, the Lions used a 13-6 run to take a double-digit lead at 22-12. From that point it was all academic as the Lions collected three of the next four points to take the set, 25-13 and the match 3-0.
