Hanni scores 14 in Mars Hill season opener

BELMONT, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (0-1) was defeated by Belmont Abbey (1-0) by a score of 73-48 in their 2023-24 season opener at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge.
After a low scoring first quarter that saw the Crusaders lead 11-7 after the opening 10 minutes of play, Belmont Abbey expanded their lead to 20 entering the half, outscoring the Lions 28-12. The Crusaders shot over 56 percent from the floor in the second with Catherine Hendershot led all players with seven points. Janette Hanni led Mars Hill with six points followed by four from Tateyoina Harris.
The third quarter saw Belmont Abbey outscore the Lions 26-16, shooting 59 percent from the floor, as Katie Bischoping led all players with seven points. Abigail Crain and Janiah Shular each added six points. Harris led the Lions with five points.
Mars Hill outscored the Crusaders 13-8 in the fourth, with Hanni recording eight points. Jaquoria Rucker and Elyseia Brown each pulled down four rebounds.
The Crusaders netted 40 percent of their shots to the Lions' 37, but were outrebounded 40-27.
Crain led all players with 15 points followed by 12 from Hendershot. Hanni led the Lions with 14 points, going 7-of-10 from the floor. Harris added 11 points and four rebounds. Naja Ngongba led all players with eight rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, November 11 when they take on Southern Wesleyan to wrap up the SAC/CC Challenge. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
