Gillis records double-double on road versus Indians

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (4-5, 1-1 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (5-1, 2-0 SAC) by a score of 66-56 Saturday evening on the road.
Catawba built their advantage in the first quarter, outscoring Mars Hill 20-8 after the first 10 minutes of play. Lyrik Thorne led all players with eight points.
The second quarter saw Mars Hill outscore Catawba 16-12 with the trio of Tateyoina Harris, Elyseia Brown, and Janette Hanni each recording four points. The Lions shot 62 percent from the floor to the Indians' 28 percent.
Mars Hill, in the third, despite outshooting Catawba, was outscored 15-13. Halei Gillis was a force on the floor, leading all players with six points and five rebounds.
The teams each netted 19 points in the fourth, the highest scoring quarter of the contest. Harris and Gillis led the Lions with six points apiece while Nala Baker also scored six for Catawba. The Indians shot just 19 percent from the floor, but hit 12-of-14 free throw attempts to seal the win.
Catawba shot just under 30 percent in the contest, but hit nine three-pointers in the game. Janiya Downs led all players with 16 points followed by 14 apiece from Thorne and Sara McIntosh. Downs led the team with eight rebounds.
Mars Hill hit 49 percent of their shots on the day. Gillis led the Lions with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double. Harris added 12 points and six rebounds. Maddie Gillie collected 10 rebounds.
The Lions return home on Wednesday, December 13 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
