Gillie nets 1,000th point, Lions win crucial SAC clash over Cavaliers

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (11-11, 5-6 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (9-12, 5-8) by a score of 80-64 Saturday afternoon for their third straight win.
In a high-scoring first quarter, both teams netted 26 points. Sarah Burton led the Cavaliers with 10 points while Maddie Gillie paced all players with 17 points, going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Lions shot 60 percent from the floor and hit 6-of-9 three-point attempts.
The Lions outscored UVA Wise in every quarter to follow, holding the Cavaliers to just nine points in the second stanza. Gillie led the Lions with five points while Tateyoina Harris added four points.
Caitlyn Ross led UVA Wise with eight points, scoring half of the Cavaliers' third quarter output. Jo Snow led Mars Hill with six points while the quartet of Harris, Gillie,, Naja Ngongba, and Jaquoria Rucker each added three apiece.
The fourth quarter saw the Lions seal the victory, outscoring the Cavaliers 21-13. Rucker and Gillie led Mars Hill with six points apiece.
Gillie's final bucket of the contest put her over 30 points for the second consecutive game. She surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone as well, currently sitting at 1,002 career points.
Gillie led all players with 31 points while Harris added 15 and a game-high nine rebounds. Snow ended the afternoon with 13 points. Rucker netted nine and pulled down eight rebounds while assisting on a game-high six baskets.
Mars Hill closes out their four-game homestand on Wednesday, February 7 when they host Carson-Newman. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 5:30 pm.
