Lions sweep season opener at LMU Tournament
The Mars Hill Lions volleyball team opened up their season with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-16) victory over Erskine College on Day One of the Lincoln Memorial University Tournament. Maddie Spurgeon led all players with ten kills.
HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill Lions volleyball team opened up their season with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-16) victory over Erskine College on Day One of the Lincoln Memorial University Tournament. Maddie Spurgeon led all players with ten kills.
The Lions took the first four points of the contest and battled back and forth with the Flying Fleet until the score was tied at seven all. Following an 11-3 run, the Lions distanced themselves enough to eventually close out the first game, 25-16.
Momentum followed the Lions as they dominantly went up 2-0, winning the second game, 25-11. Spurgeon knocked down four of her ten kills in the second frame, while Elizabeth Kaeser added three.
The final game was wrapped up by the Lions as they went on a 10-2 run to pick up their first victory of the season.
Kaeser, Sally Anne Johnson, and Dayanna Barbosa contributed six kills apiece. Kaeser also added two aces and ten digs.
Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with 15 digs and was tied with Rebecca Butler for team lead in assisted blocks with two apiece.
Mars Hill will close out the LMU Tournament Saturday, September 2 with two contests. Their first game will be played at 9 a.m. versus Lee and the final match will be played at 2 p.m. against King.
