Lions remain winless in conference, drop seventh straight

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions dropped their seventh straight match Friday evening against the visiting Royals of Queens University, 3-0, in Stanford Arena. Rebecca Butler was the only Lion with 10 or more kills.
Mars Hill had a four point lead heading into the final moments of the first set until the Royals battled back after a service error from Sarah Lorick. Reeling off three points to draw the contest within one point, both teams swapped points until two consecutive kills from Queens' Jessica Raines stole the first set for the Royals, 27-25. Raines hit an outstanding .367 on the evening.
The Lions could not regain the momentum in the final two sets as the powerful, precise offense of the Royals overwhelmed them. Raines and Rebecca Cochran led the charge with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Queens moves to 7-3 (2-2 SAC) while the Lions fall to 1-7 and remain winless in five conference matches.
Butler also led the Lions in blocks with three and digs with 17. Abby King had a team high 14 assists. Sally Anne Johnson knocked down six kills with a .750 hitting percentage.
Sydney Kunz led all players with 33 assists and 19 digs.
Mars Hill is back in Stanford Arena Saturday, September 23 for another conference matchup against the Wingate Bulldogs. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
