Mars Hill downed in four on road

GREENEVILLE, TENN. - Rebecca Butler's 12 kills were not enough to secure a Lions' victory on the road against the Tusculum Pioneers Tuesday night.
Dropping the first set, but roaring back to claim the second, the Lions entered the third riding a wave of momentum. Tusculum quickly quelled the surge, reeling off seven straight points to open the set and never looked back. The Pioneers closed out the set on a 9-1 run. They took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set by a score of 25-11.
Mars Hill battled with the Pioneers all throughout the set until the final several plays. The Pioneers took 10 of the last 11 points from a combination of smart offensive attacks and taking advantage of several Lions' defensive lapses.
Mariah Lewis and Laryssa Welch paced the Pioneers' offense. Lewis hit an incredible .550 in the match. Shannon Murphy had a game high 39 assists while Melissa Mazur led all players with 30 digs.
Tusculum goes to 5-4 (3-2 SAC) on the season.
Butler's and Maddie Spurgeon's 12 kills were a team high. Sally Anne Johnson extended her double-digit kill streak to six straight with another 10 on the evening. Lauren Hochstetler added three aces to the offense and Sarah Pasour led the Lions with 22 assists.
The Lions remain winless in the conference (0-4) and fall to 1-6 on the season as they prepare for two more matchups this weekend. The first against Queens on Friday, September 22 at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday matinee matchup with Wingate scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Both contests will be held at Stanford Arena.
