Mars Hill downed by Wingate on road in four

WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team was downed in four sets on the road against Wingate Saturday afternoon. Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with 11 kills.
Wingate escaped with the first set, 27-25 after the Lions came out strong. The Bulldogs' offense, led by Lynnlee Mather and Anna Holmquist helped the Bulldogs come away with the 1-0 lead.
Mars Hill battled back in the second, running away with the frame 25-15 to tie the match. Elizabeth Kaeser and Rebecca Butler helped the Lions knot the game at one set apiece.
The Bulldogs would return to form in the next two sets, taking them 25-15 and 25-18, respectively. The potent, spread out offense combined with Mars Hill errors helped the Bulldogs win their second straight game.
Mather, Holmquist and Rachel Alles each hit .500 on the contest. Alles had a game-high 38 assists and finished second on the team with 17 digs.
Kaeser led the Lions with 17 digs while Sarah Pasour and Abby King contributed 20 and 19 digs, respectively. Butler had one solo block and five block assists to lead all players.
The Lions dropped both regular season contests against Wingate and fall to 7-15 (5-10 SAC). Wingate improves to 20-2 (14-2 SAC).
Mars Hill returns to action on Halloween night when they take on Carson-Newman. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
