Mars Hill picks up first conference, home victory in 3-0 sweep of Coker

MARS HILL, N.C. - Maddie Spurgeon's game-high 14 kills snapped the Lions' eight-game losing streak inside Stanford Arena Friday evening, taking down Coker by a score of 3-0.
The Lions and Cobras battled tough in the tightly contested first two sets.
Spurgeon was a force in the first set, knocking down six kills on 13 attempts. Abby King added four kills and five digs in the first frame. She ended the game with her season best 11 kills as well as 16 assists.
The second set saw both teams trade points late, starting when they were knotted up at 19 apiece. The duo of Spurgeon and Sally Anne Johnson ultimately closed out the set with two kills each in the final eight points of the second frame.
To secure the victory, Mars Hill closed out the contest on a four-point run. Lauren Hochstetler's sixth kill of the night ended the long losing streak.
The Cobras offense was led by Alexis Berles, who had a team-high 11 kills. Kara Overholt was defensively stout with 22 digs and Christen Bragg picked up a game-high 34 assists.
Sarah Pasour assisted on 29 points for the Lions and added 13 digs. Hochstetler dug 26 balls and added a block on the evening.
Mars Hill improves to 2-8 (1-6 SAC) while Coker falls to 7-8 (2-5 SAC).
The victory over the Cobras marked Mars Hill's first conference and home victory of the season. Head Coach Tony Fontanelle picked up his 150th win at Mars Hill in the three-set sweep.
Mars Hill returns to Stanford Arena Saturday, September 30 to square off against Newberry at 5 p.m. The contest marks the Lions' last home game until Tuesday, October 24.
