Lions shutout Southern Wesleyan to conclude road trip

CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (2-6) picked up a 1-0 win over Southern Wesleyan (3-3) on the road Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless five innings, the Lions broke through with a RBI single from Casey Mawhinney. Following two groundouts to open the innings, Tyler Lala drilled a double into left field. Mawhinney singled through the right side of the infield, allowing Lala to round third and cross home for the lone run of the contest.
A strong effort from the Mars Hill bullpen allowed only one Warriors' runner on base in the final three innings of play; a walk in the eighth inning. Carlton Jackson closed out the contest with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win for Mars Hill.
Mawhinney led the Lions with two hits on the afternoon. Devin Patrick also recorded two hits for Southern Wesleyan.
Sam Kaplan was credited with the win, allowing four hits in five innings of play. Connor Presnell, Brett Pope, and Jackson combined for one hit in four innings, striking out three batters.
Mars Hill will open their 2020 home schedule on Friday at Henderson Field, hosting Cedarville. The single game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday will now feature a doubleheader between the teams--two seven-inning contests--beginning at 12 p.m.
