Lions take series opener over Queens, 17-5
The Mars Hill baseball team (6-13, 4-3 SAC) took game one of their weekend series versus Queens (2-17, 2-5 SAC) by a score of 17-5 Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (6-13, 4-3 SAC) took game one of their weekend series versus Queens (2-17, 2-5 SAC) by a score of 17-5 Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field.
The Lions used a 10-run seventh inning to secure the win, highlighted by Ruben Trillo's two-run home run to put the Lions up 9-2. Following Jordan Lathe's RBI single to put the Lions up by eight, Mars Hill added back-to-back runs off of wild pitches.
Queens recorded three runs in the top of the ninth with RJ Conner's solo home run opening the stretch. Both Drake Harris and Dominic Ford posted RBI singles.
Mars Hill went up 3-1 after three innings of play. In the bottom of the first, Tyler Lala launched a solo home run off of the scoreboard in left field. The teams traded runs in the second inning with Scottie Lee blasting a solo home run over the left field fence to put the Lions up 2-1. Lala collected his second RBI of the game in the third with a RBI single that plated Jordan Lathe.
The Lions powerful offense continued to roll in the bottom of the fifth as both Trillo and Lee collected RBI doubles and Austin Treadway hammered a two-run home run over the left center field fence, putting the home squad up 7-1.
Lala led the Lions' offense, going 3-of-4 and added two RBI. The trio of Trillo, Lee, and Treadway each collected three RBI.
Jared Mathewson threw a strong five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five for the win. Nick Charleson suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out nine.
The Lions close out the series on Sunday, March 8 when they take on the Royals in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Henderson Field.
