Mars Hill splits with UVa-Wise in SAC opener
The Mars Hill baseball team (3-9, 1-1 SAC) split with UVa-Wise (7-5, 1-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field, winning game one by a score of 14-10, but dropping game two, 7-4.

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (3-9, 1-1 SAC) split with UVa-Wise (7-5, 1-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field, winning game one by a score of 14-10, but dropping game two, 7-4.
GAME ONE: MHU 14, UVa-W 10
The Lions used a five-run seventh inning to come away with the victory in their South Atlantic Conference opener.
Leading 9-7 entering the frame, Scottie Lee's two-run double plated Kameron Reynolds and Austin Treadway to put the Lions up by four. Casey Mawhinney's two-run single plated Lee and Ruben Trillo later in the inning while Jacbo Legleiter's sacrifice fly later plated Mawhinney to put Mars Hill up by seven.
The Cavaliers dug into the lead in the top of the eighth by scoring three runs. Following a bases loaded walk to Bret Roberts that plated Tyler Horvath, Tyler Blaum's sacrifice fly scored Isaac Whitehead. Dawson Caigle later plated Tyler Campbell with a single up the middle.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring three runs. With the bases loaded, back-to-back batters were hit by a pitch to score the first two runs while Jordan Lathe's first of four hits plated Tyler Lala to close out the first.
Gabe Wurtz's two-run single to center cut the Lions' lead to one, but was built back to three in the bottom of the third with Legleiter's two-run double.
UVa-Wise tied the game in the fourth following a two-run single off the bat of Tristan Peccerelli, scoring Blaum and Campbell. The Lions roared back in the fourth, plating three more runs, highlighted by Lala's solo home run.
Lathe led all players with four hits while Lee and Legleiter recorded three RBI apiece. Max Poole picked up the win, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit. Jared Mathewson got the start, throwing four innings and striking out seven.
GAME TWO: UVa-W 7, MHU 4
The Cavaliers scored five in the top of the seventh to earn the split on the day.
After giving up a two-run home run to Ruben Trillo in the bottom of the sixth, UVa-Wise plated five runs to retake the lead. Tyler Campbell's two-run single highlighted the inning for the Cavaliers.
Tyler Lala's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh proved to be too little, too late for the Lions in their comeback bid.
The teams traded runs in the first inning as Gabe Wurtz plated Dawson Cagle with a RBI double for the Cavaliers while Trillo picked up his first of three RBI off a single.
Ethan Fletcher's RBI double in the top of the fourth provided the Cavaliers the 2-1 advantage after four innings.
Five Cavaliers recorded two hits in the contest while Lala and Trillo led the Lions with two hits apiece.
Greg Duncan earned the win, striking out nine in 6.1 innings pitched, allowing three runs on six hits.
