
Lions even series with Pacers, win first of season
MHU uses huge sixth inning to propel them to first win of 2025.
AIKEN, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-1) defeated USC Aiken (1-1) by a score of 9-4 Saturday afternoon to even up the weekend series.
The trailed 2-1 entering the top of the sixth. Their six-run inning kicked off with Elec Yount's RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring Toby Troutman. Walker Fox picked up his second RBI of the contest with a RBI single that scored Jackson Jones.
With the bases loaded, Max LaLime's double to left center field cleared the bases, plating three to put Mars Hill up 6-2. Terick Bumgarner, later in the inning, scored LaLime with a RBI single into left.
The Pacers cut the deficit down to four after the seventh, and following a scoreless eighth, Chapel Matson extended the Lions' lead up to six with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Yount and Carter Potts.
Both Yount and Potts had three hits on the day, both going 3-for-4. Yount scored a game-high three runs while LaLime led all players with three RBI.
Starting pitcher Nate Crissey threw 3.2, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three. Reid Withers, in his season debut, threw 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five for the win.
The Lions return to the diamond on Sunday, February 2. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in the series finale.
