MHU splits with Concord in Sunday series
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (3-5) split their series finale doubleheader versus Concord (2-1), falling in game one by a score of 18-16, but shutting out the Mountain Lions in game two by a score of 6-0.
GAME ONE: CON 18, MHU 16
Concord, in the top of the ninth, completed their comeback, plating two runs. A two-run single from MJ Hunter proved to be the game-winning play.
After going down 13-0 after the first inning, the Mountain Lions began their comeback bid, scoring five in the top of the second inning. Following one run in the third, they plated an additional six in the fourth, highlighted by Korbin Bostic's two-run double.
With the Mountain Lions encroaching upon Mars Hill's lead in the seventh, 15-13, Terick Bumgarner doubled in the bottom of the stanza, plating Max LaLime.
Mars Hill poured on the runs in the bottom of the first, opened by Chapel Matson's two-run single. Later in the frame, leading 4-0, Jackson Jones extended the Lions' lead to six with a two-run double, plating Bumgarner and Peyton Starkey.
The Lions capped off the scoring with LaLime's second grand slam of the week.
Matson and LaLime led all players with four RBI apiece. Jones, Matson, Elec Yount, and Carter Potts each recorded two hits.
On the mound, the Lions' Quentin Graves threw 3.1 innings of relief work, allowing just one run on one hit, striking out three for the no decision.
GAME TWO: MHU 6, CON 0
The Lions plated four in the bottom of the first. Carter Potts' RBI single up the middle plated Walker Fox for the first run of the game. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Peyton Starkey tripled to right field, clearing the bases and extending the lead to four.
Chapel Matson blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Lions' lead to six.
Starkey and Matson each had two hits on the game and combined for five RBI. Elec Yount scored two runs.
Brennan Williams was credited with the complete game shutout, striking out seven.
The Lions return to the diamond on Tuesday, February 12 when they face Emmanuel on the road.
