Mars Hill defeated by King in non-conference play
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (8-20) was defeated by King (7-21) by a score of 9-8 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
King trailed 8-6 heading into the top of the eighth. A RBI double by Michael Starrs pulled the Tornado within one before Nathan Borchardt's two-run home run to left plated the game-winning runs.
Tied at one after one and following a scoreless second inning, the Lions plated three in the third, highlighted by Peyton Starkey's two-run double to left field. The teams then traded runs in the fourth with Walker Fox plating the Lions' fifth run of the contest with a RBI single down the right field line, scoring Elec Yount.
The Tornado rallied in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring four runs to take the 6-5 lead entering the bottom of the sixth. The Lions retook the lead in the bottom of the frame as Chapel Matson's bases loaded walk tied the game at six. Starkey then put the Lions up with a sacrifice fly that scored Yount.
In the seventh, Max LaLime's RBI groundout put Mars Hill up by two.
Borchardt led all players with three hits while he and Starrs led the team with two RBI apiece. Yount led the Lions with three hits and three runs scored while Starkey led all players with four RBI.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday, March 21 when they host Tusculum. First pitch in game one of the series is set for 3 p.m. at Henderson Field.
