Mars Hill downs Tusculum, 30-3
JR Martin rushed for three scores in the Lions' lopsided victory.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (2-3, 2-2 SAC) rolled past Tusculum (0-6, 0-5 SAC) by a score of 30-3 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Mars Hill struck twice in the first quarter with JR Martin's first of three rushing touchdowns. Just 4:30 into the frame, Martin capped off an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard rush into the endzone. Less than a minute later, Cherron Holt picked off a Tusculum pass and returned it 40 yards for the score, putting the Lions up 13-0 after one quarter of play.
Lon Teachey's 35-yard field goal with 11:45 left in the half saw the Lions go up by 16, a mark that would hold until the half ended.
Midway through the third, Martin scampered 10 yards for his second score of the contest. Tusculum broke the shutout bid with 3:46 left in the quarter as John Aiden Pittman hit a 40-yard field goal.
Just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter, Martin took off on a 34-yard run to put the Lions up by 27, recording his third touchdown on the ground.
The Lions held Tusculum to just 150 total yards on 51 plays while racking up nearly 400 yards on 59 plays. Martin threw for 215 yards and ran for 69 while Kyeandre Magloire led all players with 75 yards on the ground. Malik Laurent led all players with four receptions and 80 yards to his name.
Defensively, the Lions were led by Dexter Fitzpatrick who totalled nine tackles and one sack. Steven Reid added seven stops while Isaac Weaver added five on the day.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, October 26 when they face UVA Wise. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
