
Lions wrap up 2024 season on road at Limestone
MHU closes out regular season with 5-4 record.
GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Mars Hill football team (5-4, 5-3 SAC) was felled by Limestone (8-3) in their regular season finale by a score of 31-26 Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter, Mars Hill's Jon Gullette opened the scoring with his first of three rushing touchdowns on the day, a four-yard run that put the Lions up 6-0.
Limestone, with 12 minutes left in the third, scored their first touchdown of the day as Jack Stultz was on the receiving end of a 37-yard pass from Dustin Noller, putting the Saints up 7-6. Gullette regained the lead for Mars Hill with a 20-yard run with 5:38 left in the quarter. JB Potts' 24-yard field goal with 1:44 on the clock sent the Saints into the final quarter trailing by two.
Gullette, just 58 seconds into the fourth, extended the Lions' lead to nine with an 11-yard run. The Saints responded, scoring 21 straight points, highlighted by Noller's 59-yard pass to DJ Black, giving the Saints the 24-19 lead with under seven minutes to play.
Mars Hill fought until the bitter end, as Noah Pittman caught a six-yard pass from JR Martin to cut the Saints' lead down to five, 31-26, with 22 seconds remaining.
The Saints put up nearly 500 yards of total offense with Noller throwing for 376 yards and two scores.
Martin led the Lions with 222 yards in the air and one score while Gullette led the Lions with 64 yards and three touchdowns. Izaiah Jean-Baptiste led Mars Hill with 69 yards on six catches followed by Beau DeBerry's five receptions, totaling 57 yards.
Steven Reid led the Lions' defense with 14 tackles followed by 12 from Dexter Fitzpatrick. Cherron Holt led all players with four pass break-ups.
