Wingate defeats Women’s Basketball, 84-73
Deal posts double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds
WINGATE, N.C. - Wingate defeated Mars Hill, 84-73, at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 15-9, 10-6 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Lions fall to 15-9, 8-8 in the league.
Janitsha Williams led Wingate and all scorers with 24 points. Kurie Washington followed up with 16 points. CC Brooks and Tiffany Brown had 15 and 13, respectively.
Taylor Deal recorded a double-double for Mars Hill with 20 points and 11 rebounds, with nine coming on the offensive glass. Brittini Young and Tyler Carlson came up with 14 and 12, respectively. Kristen Metcalf had eight.
The Lions held a five-point lead, 8-3, two minutes into the game off a bucket by Carlson. Wingate led for the latter half of the first period, and a Tish Logan trey as time expired made the score 38-30 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Wingate led by 15 points, 52-37, off two free throws by Brown with 13:24 left in the game before Mars Hill mounted a comeback. A 26-12 run by the Lions, capped by a 10-foot jumper by Jackie Simon, cut the deficit to one point, 64-63 with 4:23 remaining.
However, Mars Hill would get no closer. Wingate closed the game on a 20-10 spurt for the final margin.
The Lions will host Catawba on Wednesday, February 23. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
