Martinsen scores in Lions' home opener
The Mars Hill women’s soccer team (0-3, 0-3 SAC) was defeated 2-1 by Lincoln Memorial (2-2-1, 2-0-1 SAC) in their 2021 home opener Thursday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-3, 0-3 SAC) was defeated 2-1 by Lincoln Memorial (2-2-1, 2-0-1 SAC) in their 2021 home opener Thursday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Railsplitters struck twice in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Rachel Taylor netted her third of the season taking a Jessica Cravero pass inside the box and tucked it in past Victoria Forren.
Graciela Palencia doubled the Lincoln Memorial lead in the 42nd minute with a laser from around 30 yards out, falling just under the crossbar.
Sanne Martinsen, in the 48th minute, netted the Lions' first goal of the season off of a penalty kick, blasting the ball to the right of Emanuely Costa.
Despite getting outshot 10-1 in the first half, the Lions played a tighter second, launching five shots on target.
Taylor led all players with nine shots, five on goal. Martinsen led the Lions with five attempts, three on goal.
Lynzie Hull picked up the win, making one save. Sarah Paiva made five saves in the second half for Mars Hill.
The Lions return to the pitch on Thursday, March 18 when they host Tusculum. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
